Cruising our great waterways
“Water everywhere, but not a drop to drink,” goes the saying. True perhaps if you are adrift at sea, but on a lunch cruise there’s wine, fine food, fantastic views and all the (bottled) water you could ever drink!
The US has so many natural waterways, its little surprise that cruising around them is a popular pastime.
Across the country, the major rivers wind between states. They flow from mountain plateaus, through deltas teeming with wildlife, and to the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans, as well as into the Gulf of Mexico.
Some states, such as Florida, are dominated by vast swathes of water; the ‘Sunshine State’ is home to the everglades, the largest subtropical wilderness in the US.
The Great Lakes, some shared with Canada, help to comprise the most significant collection of fresh water lakes in the world.
Waterways act both as drainage and as vital lifelines for the US. Perhaps the most impressive are the Mississippi, Colorado and Missouri rivers.
Sailing on the Mississippi, it’s possible to notch up 1,800 miles before you reach its end -plenty of time for some impromptu fishing or relaxation.
Lunch cruises are very popular gifts this time of year thanks to the favorable weather.
They are great for a date, or even an informal business meeting.
Gift certificates are available for lunchtime cruises in Florida, Oregon, Minnesota, and Maryland, to name but a few.
Perhaps you know someone who appreciates both food and boats? If so, they’re guaranteed to be impressed when they step aboard an older showboat, or tuck into a gourmet feast aboard a new luxury cruise ship.
Whichever experience you select, there will be food, drink and fun flowing for all who set sail.
